Doesn't it just mean "completely" :?: Do you have some context?

Doesn't it mean, "all the way"; "by and by" one hears these things, normally spoken by some clever "so and so" who has all the answers, causing you to advise him to "F 'n O".

It means that the trunk or "butt" has been cut into parallel slices.

Other types of cut are "crown cut" where a cut is taken, the butt rotated 90 degrees then another cut taken and so on, therefore all cuts are tangental to the outside of the butt.

"quater sawn is where the cut is at right angles to the tangent, often used to show the medular rays in oak.

I'm sure that's not what my mum means when she says to "make sure that pork joint is cooked through and through". In this case it could be a type of joint. (or rather how well cooked it is) :)

As I say, all depends on the context.
