What happens if you don't use the right trowel?

My wife is in the process of laying a 600 x 300 porcelain tile floor on a flat, smooth and level concrete floor - probably the one saving grace here. However she appears to be using a 5mm trowel, and I understand she should be using something much deeper - 10-12mm, possibly even 20mm. I'm fairly certain this was pointed out to her when she bought the tiles, and when she asked the kitchen fitter for advice, but she just carried on using the trowel we already had for wall tiling regardless.

Am I right in thinking she's using the wrong trowel? If so, what will be the effect of using the wrong trowel? Will she get away with it because the floor is in excellent condition? If not, I guess the tiles will pop up after a fairly short period of time? I guess we'll then have to try to chip the adhesive off both the floor and the tile and try to relay?

Not that I'm planning to tell her any of this - she's completely ignored anything I've said to date. Just so I know.
