:confused: Hi

We have just pulled out an old clay fireback used for coal
(regular type fireplace opening).

We are going to increase the size of the opening
(not a great deal - flue/throat will be checked for spillage),
and insert a very heavy old log burning basket, similar to
a Cromwell basket. The basket has a 'fireback' fitted.

This basket will sit inside a brick housing, like you'd find
in an old pub.

MY QUESTION;

Considering the heat factor, what is the best ratio of
mortar mix for the bricks.

The old bricks for the fire surround and attached to the clay
fireback are a sandy colour.

Does that have a bearing on it - should it be a overly sandy mix?

Many thanks in advance, Stephen
