What is this, and what does it do?

The rectifiers would be trackside - the early trains were supplied DC third rail. London Undergound and south of London (plus Merseyside still are).

Ward Leonard - Motor/Generator sets. One of my favourite subjects (Motor control)

Ahh what memories
Sunday mornings, all the machines are stopped for the weekend and what's on the job list :?:
Routine maintenance on the Ward Leonard sets in the paper finishing dept.
Manual oil filled star/delta starter, check oil levels, contacts & operating mechanism.
Main generator, excitation generator, main dc drive motor, check & inspect all brushes & brushgear, remove all carbon and tissue dust and grease all drives.
Check & clean resistance contacts in speed controller.
Twenty odd dc drives ranging from half hp to hundred hp, (0.37Kw to 75Kw for the youngsters ;) ) Then we could home still tasting carbon dust until 4 hours later.

Incidently we also had a mercury arc rectifier fed from a 650Kva 11,0000/440V transformer for just one dc drive motor. Seem to remember you needed sunglasses when you were in the sub station. Don't know who got the mercury when it was removed in 83 though.
