inexpertly installed.

almost always fitted to take the warm humid air out of a steamy bathroom through the ceiling to combat condensation and damp and to expel it, through the duct, outside the house, usually through a hole in a wall.

If it is anywhere else, ask why.

judging by the timbers and valley construction its a fairly old house and being as it’s in a hallway. my guess is some variant or home attempt at piv. plus it’s a big ass unit being fed by a 2.5mm cable.
hardly screams extractor to be honest, which would usually run off the lighting circuit.
plus the pump is closer to the source of air, assuming it’s pulling fresh air from outside which reduces the possibility of the pipe collapsing .

And there you have it Mr OP. This lot do not have a clue. Ask the present owners/vendors or whoever is inspecting the house for a pre purchase survey or even the estate agents.
