Morning!

I want to open up between my kitchen and living room, to create some light/space/etc in a non-load bearing, internal masonry wall in a 1920's house.

The opening will be Approx 1600 across.

Can anybody give me a steer on the required lintel dimensions/material? Also, whether the Lintel can sit directly on the existing bricks or if I need to do any other work prior to fitting the lintel?

Many thanks

A 6"x4" timber would be OK for that span and loading; sure that the wall doesn't support anything else, eg floor?

The Joists run in parallel with the wall and don't sit on it. The upstairs walls are built on top of the floor boards.

Hadn't considered timber...
