House built in late 50's. Paint came off really easily in most places but wall has loads of cracks.

What would be the best way to hide them before painting?

Cheers

If you become confident that it is distemper, then Zinsser have a guide for painting over it here: http://www.zinsseruk.com/how-to-guide/how-to-paint-limewash-distemper-walls/ which references their AllCoat solvent based primer/finish coat. I know that Dulux has a similar product, also solvent based for powdery, friable surfaces.

I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I've recently had cause to look into other Zinsser products based on recommendations from trades and also forum users here. You could also call Zinsser tech support for additional advice.
