what to do with a base rail

hi all,

i've just put new banisters in, with new new newels, handrail, spindles etc.

the wood under the baserail is painted and the handrail, spindles and newel will be stained wood.

does it usually look better to paint the baserail or stain it?

i was going to paint it, thinking the whole thing would look more integrated to the stairs if i did, but now i'm thinking it might look better stained.

any advice?
