What should you paint first walls or skirting boards/archatrave. I 've always painted the walls but watching a tv advert I saw the opposite, with the gloss being painted on the skirting board going onto the walls before the wall being painted down to the skirting board.

If the woodwork is previously painted, then the woodwork is glossed after the walls have been painted. the idea is that the wall colour can be painted on the woodwork a little then the gloss cut back neat to the walls. Its easier to do this that the paint the woodwork and then the walls. If there is too much gloss put on the walls the emulsion wont stick to it very well.

I find it easier to cut the walls in after doing the wood work, especially if the top of the skirting is slightly bumpy.

That way I can take the cutting in line up a mm or two to compensate for things. Another advantage is that the woodwork has an extra day or two to harden before the carpet fitters turn up.
