what to put down on the drive

Re" Gravel. Apart from the slope, believe you may be under the misapprehension that all it consists of is x tonnes tipped which is then raked out,

This is not so: it requires significant preparation .

That apart cannot suggest anything as drive refurbishing is not generally cheap.

so do you think gravel would work? only other cheap option i can think of is tarmac. any ideas on cost to do the area? I am looking to spend no more than £1000 on it, i will try and do as much of the labour as possible.

£1000 aint gonna buy you much.

If you did all the prep work yourself you may get the maccers to do it for 1k. This would involve you digging off, laying edgings, m.o.t. so that the black lads can come and lay 40mm base and 30mm top.

Alternatively lay a couple of rows of slabs and fill in between with gravel.

That mature tree is not going to do you any favours either.
