what to use to seal stair treads?

I've got an MDF staircase, what we could afford, and we've stained the treads and painted the risers. Looks really nice and we'd like to keep it that way.

I now need to seal the treads but now sure what to use. Varnish seems obvious until you consider the kids slipping down the stairs, or the mrs when she's had too many 'small' glasses of wine.

So, any advice? Is there anything that will seal the stained wood to protect it yet not be slippy?

Thanks in advance.
