what about adding another 1/2 inch strip of maple at the back of the stair tread and covering it with a strip of cove molding?

get an additional piece off wood the same and glue it to the back

Both surfaces (old tread and new tread) are bare wood right now. I will be staining and putting polyurethane over the seen surfaces, just before putting them in place. I just wanted to verify that i should keep the undersides of the wood bare for the adhesive.

yes untreated untill they are fixed and secure
