Depends on the property, but optical down, ionisation up, heat in kitchen.
Also consider ionisation alarms for each bedroom and interlinked CO alarm if you have an open/gas fire.

cheers echos..bought an optical mains + 9v bat back up & an ionisation 9v mains/bat back up today from screwfix ionisation was £12 approx and the photoelectric was £26 ? why is the optical much more expensive 
..needed them both anyway so just bought them think they are dicon so presume of a decent quality at that price...+ ive also boarded the loft out fitting a loft ladder hatch kit..using for light storage etc should i fit a detector in the loft..
