Ive removed some cement fiber board from my chimney hoping to find somthing nice underneath it that i can install a log burner in.

Im dissapointed with what ive been left to work with

What a mess.

How do i go about sorting this out?

Theres a wooden lintle which i guess needs replacing with metal or concreat.

Then the egdes need bricking up.

Its not deep enought to fit any decent fire in i dont think. So some bricks will removing from the center.

Its a 1920 house. Im not sure why it looks like this. If somones messed around with it or it was built like this. Would a victoryain fire place cover all of this up?

Id have liked to have seen a nice brick arch there.

Ive got my heart set on a log burner.

Out of interst why would it look like this and any ideas what i can do with it?

If it's any consolation I've just been tidying up my 1960's fireplace an it's much the same. I think my original builders must have used the half metre thick fireplace wall as an opportunity to dispose of all the left over half bricks, broken bricks, give the on-site apprentice something to do, etc.
