I spotted HiTuff cable on TLC's web site, and it's billed as tougher then PVC and easier to work than SWA, but it says it's suitable for use where SWA isn't needed.

Now running outside, for example, you need either SWA or something in steel conduit, so from the above it seems HiTuff wouldn't do. So what would you use it for?

it mainly seems aimed at portable power etc where you need something tougher than normal flex but SWA is not really practical

you don't wan't to be burying this stuff though

Clipped to a wall for lighting etc, where mechanical protection is not needed.

OK, but if that's the outside face of a wall, isn't mechanical protection always needed?

The main reason for mechanical protection is to stop people inadvertently damaging the cable, e.g. digging with a spade. If you can see it clipped direct then you know it is there.
