I don't get all this fish stuff.
  • Are the French or the British using fish as the red herring!
  • Do we have more fish off our coast than anywhere else? if so why
  • Who owns all the super trawlers fishing our waters?

it's just a distraction by the brexers to try to keep up the fury of their supporters.

Worrying about less than 0.01% of our economy and the handful of billionaire families that own most of the boats.

So why is Macron getting so upset?

brexers always put adjectives into their argument as though it absolves them from dealing in facts

The EU have more leverage so they are negotiating for what they want.......

ie if the UK want tariff free access to Single Market they have to accept the rules

and if the UK want a deal, they have to agree to access to fishing.

thats it, nobody is panicking, nobody is getting upset....on the EU side

Obviously mistaken.... So are these super trawlers owned by?
catch quotas were issued to UK and other fishermen. most of the UK quotas were sold by the rufty-tufty owners who prefer sitting round a sunny pool to battling the waves. Most of the northern Ireland catch is landed by a single trawler. And almost all of Wales' quota.

"Half of England's quota in foreign hands
£160m worth of England's fishing quota is in the hands of vessels owned by companies based in Iceland, Spain and the Netherlands, according to BBC research.

That amounts to 130,000 tonnes of fish a year and 55% of the quota's annual value in 2019."

French fishing minister on news earlier " No deal will destroy french fishing industry". He then went on about GDP and how the UK postion on the deal makes no sense to him so clearly another who can`t see past his nose.

You may hear terms like "family-owned boats" to make you think of the rosy-cheeked wife looking out to sea before putting dinner on. But they mean billionaire families.

"More than a quarter of the United Kingdom’s fishing quota is in the hands of a tiny group of the country’s wealthiest families, an Unearthed investigation has found.

Just five families on the Sunday Times Rich List hold or control 29% of the UK’s fishing quota."

So 55% foreign-owned, and 29% UK billionaire-owned.

Doesn't leave much for the little man, does it?

How much does Doris want to damage the country for the sake of a few billionaires?

When Scotland regains its independence, the rest of the UK has next to no fishing industry to worry about.

I get the argument that fishing is only 0.01% of UK gdp but, its a whole lot more in real terms for the people who live there.

The people who live there have a harvestable and saleable resource.
The high seas is not something I'd aspire to, but it's probably more appealing (and a better living) to the local people, than serving cream teas (in season) to tourists.
