What's my water tank made of?

We recently had a combi-boiler and all new rads put in our house. The CH engineer who did the install did not remove the cold water tanks from the loft. There are two tanks. One is small and made of plastic and the other large and made of....something else. Neither have been used since the boiler was changed.

The large one sat halfway through the ceiling on two metal beams cemented into the brickwork. I've cut the copper pipes and plastic overflows off the two tanks and pulled the large one up through its hole and into the loft space.

I haven't cut it or damaged it in any way because I'm worried about what it might be made of? Does anyone know if cold-water tanks have ever been made of asbestos? It doesn't look or feel like metal, or anything like the other tank, which is definitely plastic. It's also very heavy. I'm not sure what it is and I'd like to know before I do anything else with it.

Can anyone tell me a definitive test I can do to find out?

Any advice would be greatfully received.

Cheers

Yes some have been known to be asbestos.

Could you take a picture???

If in doubt get a specialist into test it. will cost you but it could be removed and a clean air certificate issued.

It's likely to be Asbestos Cement. Not the same animal as the really nasty stuff, but not something you'd want to break up. Do a search - plenty here.
