doesn't having it above the spill level just mean it will be the sink puking up nasty stuff rather than the aav?

I guess the idea is that you will see that earlier and do something about it?

it's more that you may not notice a boxed in or concealed AAV may be leaking like a sieve - you are likely to notice that the pan or basin isn't draining

I had a thought about this last night, does the valve open due to a vacuum in the system? as the pipe has a hole drilled through it where the cable runs would this effect the operation of the valve?

the cable thing, I couldn't believe what I was seeing!

I can - I had the same on a soil pipe on a job - that was on the wet side it was letting water dribble out in a ceiling void , that brought part of the ceiling down .
