There are no cuts, It is all smoke and mirrors. Where cuts are to be made, they are still planned cuts, that were actually supposed to start kicking in end of this year/start of next.

Individual budgets have been cut (as they always are all the time), and the media have painted these as examples of austerity.

The country's position is buggered because of the economic mis-management of the last LABOUR government. We're still feeling the hangover of tony and gordon's spending spree that was mostly carried out using borrowed money!!

It'll take years to fix, and it will be painful. Social security, nhs and debt servicing costs are too high, but the necessary changes cause a massive backlash with voters.

IMO it's unfortunate that everyone gets a vote, including stupid people, welfare sponges and those who will only vote for a particular party because their parents did.

Because of this labour will probably get back into power at the next election...and then this nation will be truely buggered!!

Personally I probably wouldn't go quite that far, but I feel that you should have to contribute to society and earn your vote. (I.e. pay enough tax and then you get a vote).

It's not going to make a difference. Country is stuffed, we owe too much money and we are making less every year to pay it off. It will end in violence and a return to a standard of living that we have not known for a very long time. The public sector is a millstone around our neck and it's going to take us down.

Only solution is to move to a country with loadsamoney and little debt. The only place in Europe that really fits the bill is Norway and we are well on the way to retiring there.

Look at interest rates under the last tory govt. !5%. Then you had Norman Lamont and The cheating, untrustworthy, John Major forever babbling on about seeing green shoots. That of course never came and they were duly booted out of office for a long long time.
But it's all changed now huh ? The tories are gonna get it right huh ? They laid out their stall at the very first opportunity they got. The budget. Where they cut 5% off of income tax for people earning serious amounts of money. Like their need is greater.

So front line cuts have happened, but spending has gone up because of management and consulation and other costs.

it started in the 70's when we realised we couldnt compete industrially, there was no credible follow up plan, north sea oil revenues were wasted on a lost generation, huge areas of the country have no credible industry, this remains true today. successive governments have tried to conceal this by inventing jobs (public sector) and latterly by the labour party by pumping vast amounts of money into the an utterly illusional housing market.

financial services, will never be the solution, money is something that comes off the back of a real economy. We have to think of a way which we can produce stuff that the rest of the world wants. My guess is it will have to be things like high quality engineering, research and IP, we will never be an industrial nation again, we cannot compete on scale of economy.

These are very painful things to address and are not politically "cool" where short termism is the order of the day.

We live in interesting times.
