When you cut real-wood/laminate floor boards, what should the minimum length of the useable off-cuts be

The instructions say that after completing the FIRST row to start the second row with the off-cuts from the previuos row

I will have off-ciuts from each row of about 7 inches, is this wise to use

The floorboards @6 feet at a time and are covered with 6 mm MDF across the entire room (room @8' x 8')

As the room is small size I would go a lot more than 7" off-cut, you may find a step line joint on each side of the wall ? I have done one similar to your size room and I use a difference size off-cut each time providing you have a enough materials to do this. You could do a 7" off-cut then the next one 14" off-cut then back to 7" off-cut, the choice is yours. 7" off-cut all over is okay but not next to each other and every other one & providing it's well glued. I hope jasonb won't mind me using his picture of his room. Jasonb has use a lot longer length of the off-cut to give you some idea what it's looks like.

bit confused here you should only have one 7" offcut which then starts the next row which means if the walls are parrallel the next offcut will be 14" 21" ect ect
although most manufacturers recomend a minimum of overlap between board ends usualy more than 7"[end joins should be no less than twelve " appart]
I will have off-ciuts from each row of about 7 inches, is this wise to use

perhaps i am misunderstanding the situation

Hello lordlucan and others

To avoid same joints in all the rows when your floorboards are all of the same lengths is to cut several 'starters', e.g. half board, quarter board, 1/3 board.
Other rule of thumb is to try to space the joints a minimum of 30cm.

Hope this helps
