Hi.
Right then …! Electricity consumption from 4th June to 4th July 2025 was 173.4 kWh. From 4th June to 4th July 2026 it was 268.83 kWh.

During the first period I was running an electric double oven and induction hob, which I’m not doing at the moment as I’m using gas for cooking. All other appliances are the same for both periods, except I now have an immersion heater which I thought was running for 1 hour per day on Economy 7.

This might be the answer! The “timer” is set to come on between 5:00 and 6:00 every morning. Over the last few days I’ve been switching the immersion off at the isolation switch, and turning it on for a short time when the water temperature in the tap went cool. I’ve not checked the consumption over this period yet. However, it dawned on me that although I turned the power back on last night and the water quickly warmed up, it shouldn’t have done as the timer should have been off. So, timer not working.
Also the water temperature used to be scalding hot and turning the thermostat down had no effect. So, thermostat not working.

I’ve also found in the loft some sort of tv signal booster which is on all the time.

I have a smart meter, but no separate display unit. When I asked Octopus to send one they said that the display wouldn’t work with the current meter as it was an older meter. I asked if they could replace the meter, but apparently they do not do this on a one off job, only as a planned update programme.

I reckon I’ll get a plug in energy monitor, a new thermostat, a new timer and an electrician!

PS. Sunray - I was quoted £1,400 for travel insurance (bypass). I took out a Nationwide Flexi Plus account which costs £18 per month. This included free mobile phone and vehicle breakdown insurance as well as Aviva travel insurance. My pre-existing condition premium was an additional £137 and included cruise cover. Saved about £1,000.
