where to place a thermostat?

is there a general place where a thermostat should be placed?

i have a hallway down stairs and a landing upstairs, it seems that upstairs is always colder than downstairs would the landing be the best place to postition a thermostat or is it generally the downstairs hallway?

Depends on layout of property/ airflow/position of rads, many variations to equation.
 
There is no correct answer to the question of where you should put a thermostat. The best thing you could do to control the temperature is to have TRV's on all your rads except for where the room stat is located. That way you can control the temp limit each room will reach individually.

Personally, after some trial and error, I've found the best place for the room stat in my house in in the living room. We have a fire in there, but never use it in the months when the CH is in use.

A wireless thermostat is a wonderful piece of kit and allows for infinite possibilities in terms of final location.
