Which backing to put on wall ??

Hi guys looking for some advice on what i should use to cover these bricks walls in this old cottage im working in


the walls are brick cavity walls the mortar joints are some kind of mixture they was using back in the day which is a kind of lime mixed with coal dust and quite soft stuff


all i know of is hardwall / bonding and 4-1 sand and cement what would be advised to be used
