Hello All,

I'm wondering which is the most suitable flex to use in order to provide power to my 230V~AC, 1phase 0.18/012A fan.

The only 2-core flex I can see on Maplin is the following:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=23087&doy=4m2

...which is a "Round 2-Core 3A Mains Cable." ...?

Additionally, if I wanted to add a switch, such as the following, would this particular model be safe?

Many thanks in advance for any advice,

Steve

First of all what sort of fan is it?

Extractor? table top? What, if you are on about an extractor fan the answer is no and no!!!

If it is a table fan, then yes, probably, read the manufactures instruction,?!?!?!?!

More info please & pics would help

Thanks for getting back to me, oharaf.

The fan is an extractor fan, pictured:

Its purpose is to extract paint fumes (it is a brushless fan so no danger of sparks) from a home-made spray booth, not too dissimilar to what this chap has done:

I have the following crimps:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=34145&criteria=crimp&doy=2m2

Now all I need to do is provide a means of power. Does this give you the info you need?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

use 3 core cable 0.75mm because fan may need an earth, picture not clear. Use sufficient length of cable to put 3 pin plug on. I only use crimps to extend cable as a last resort and definetly I don't use un insulated crimps. Even with heatshrink on the crimps I still woudn't trust them. It looks like it is going to be a moveable set up so use a full length of cable and do a proper job from the beginning.

Hi Ian,

Sure appreciate your response. You are correct in your assumption that it is a mains voltage fan.

Regarding the crimps - are you saying that those which I linked to on Maplin are not up to the job, or even worse, unsafe? If so then please let me know how you would suggest a safe means of connecting the 3 core cable to the pins on the fan itself?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Why not use the correct type of plug, i.e. the one that would be used if the fan were installed in a computer case?

If it's a mains voltage fan then it's proabblly not one intended for use in a PC, i've never seen a PC that used mains voltage fans.

The mains connections to the fan need some protection though. Ideally the setup should be built so they can't be accessed without the use of a tool.

2 core 3 amp mains flex will be fine, make sure you restrain it where it leaves the enclosure containg the fan

PCs are not the only computers...

As my Apple Mac loving mates keep trying to tell me  , frankly I tried to use one once to browse the web, and you know how it is when they totally remodel a shop and you can't find anything you need!... (vista feels just as confusing though in fairness!)

True but I don't think i've ever seen a computer that used mains voltage fans. When you have a 12V DC supply arround anyway it doesn't make much sense to do so.

The connection on the fan look like the right type for the crimp recepticles he has linked to subject to the size matching (which is hard to judge from photos). Personally I would probablly have just soldered it though.
