can anyone recommend a stud/pipe/cable detector that works well ? the bosch multi-function unit looks good but some people dont like it -is it better to get seperate units or a multi function unit -------thanks
Unless you are willing to spend a substantial amount of money most of them are very hit and miss, and not something that I would consider reliable and trust!
The bosch is tosh!
Norcon, has it correct, using a magnet you can locate the nails / screws and hence the studs.
Another way of location is to shine a powerful torch across the surface of the Plasterboard will show up the "depressions" caused by the indentations in the Plasterboard where the studs are located, then use a magnet to locate the nails / Screws.
Place the powerful torch with the body of the torch is touching the plasterboard switch it on, and the resultant sweep of the torch will result in revealing the position of the studs.
