dedpends on joist centres if the boards are metric and the spacings are metric[400 800 1200 1600 2000 2400] then it wont make much difference
easier to put up 1800x900 but more finnishing time

if you have metric boards and imperial spacings your cutting ever board on a joist

Is it a ceiling or are you dry lining the walls? Biggest is always best IMO, especially on a large room.

It is a ceiling, I have been told to use 4x1 battens over the existing artex and plaster board.

Should the battens run in the same direction of the plasterboards.

Thanks

Why use additional battens, I can’t see any point in that! Depending on the pattern, just knock the high spots off & overboard using longer screws, obviously picking up on the existing joists; it’s all I’ve done! If you’re going to go to all the extra work of battening, you might as well rip the whole lot down & start again, it will certainly be a lot quicker!

I was told to batten because I am fitting spot lights in the ceiling, any advice???
Ahh, that sort of makes a bit more sense; but are you saying you’re going to bring the ceiling level down by 4 inches to accommodate the spots? Still seems a bit OTT to me, my down lighters are fixed in between the joists as are most; just make sure they are well ventilated & not close to the joists or any cables up there. The joists are usually at least 6 inches deep (mine are 8 ) & so will give better ventillation than 4 inches!

Thanks Richard

My joists are also 8", will the spots go through two board thicknesses plus artex. My room is 5 x 6m is there a way to work out number of lights.

Hi Ian
You will probably have trouble with the light clips on a 2 board thickness. Given that you don’t really need to batten out (which is where you started), why don’t you just get the Artex ceiling re-skimmed? It’s perfectly feasible & an accomplished plasterer won’t have any problems with it at all. As for the number of down lights, that’s a big room & it really depends on what you want from the lighting. My kitchen is 6m x 4m & I have 9 down lights over the central area, which gives the overall brightness you want in a kitchen, but I also have low voltage, pelmet lighting which gives a much lower ‘mood’ level light & we tend to leave that on when not using the kitchen as it is also a walk through access to our conservatory.

Personally, I would split the lighting levels in the 2 areas. Have a higher density light level in the kitchen with pelmet/worktop mood level as I have; but in the lounge area, I would have a much lower level of ceiling lighting along with some wall lighting &/or free standing lamps; split the cieling ligthing over 2 switches so you can vary the brightness & have the wall lights switched separately; this will allow you to vary the lighting mood according to the effect you want to achieve.
