I've just picked up one of these things to provide a means of isolating the 22mm supply coming down from my large cold water tank into the bottom of my hot water cylinder:

Don't get me wrong, it seems great, but hell, I'm not shutting off the main water supply to a nuclear reactor! Should I be using something else for this job, it seems like an absolute monster for what I (in my novice opinion) feel like is a fairly trivial task.

I guess a wider question I also have is what type of valve do I use where; are there any rules I should be following?

Well there you go. Thanks for the info! I'll stick to that type then, where I can. 15mm version will be good for mains as well, I guess?
