Hi all, I am about to wallpaper one of our bedrooms and from previous efforts know the walls are not modern type plastered walls but a whiteish porous finish and a bit gritty  the house was built in 1928 if that gives a clue to what the finish is. What would be the best coating to use to cover the walls before papering ? cant afford to have it plastered

At that age its more than likely to be horse hair plaster, very good but very pourus. Would be better to give it couple of coats of white matt, filling any holes as you go and sanding down. This will provide a decent surface to paper onto.
