Whining TRVs

I recently had all my radiators replaced with new ones and had TRVs put on all of them. They are all siemens TRVs. The TRVs are beginning to annoy me because when they are not fully open or closed you get a constant whining sounds as the radiator comes upto temperature and the TRV is about to close. This sounds seems to last for ages. It dissapears if you open or close the TRV a little as expected. Is there any way I can fix the problem?


In addition, when the central heating part of my boiler comes on, it makes loud thunder sound for a few seconds like if it's going to take off! Does this indicate a problem? The boiler is only a year old. It's a potterton Performa 28i combination boiler.

One of the most common reasons for whining TRV's or banging TRV's is because they are fitted onto the return rather than the flow pipe. If your TRV is not made for this you'll get lots of noises. Check whether they are on flow or return

I remember asking this exact question to guy who installed the rads and he said that these particular TRVs and lockshield valves could be put on either the flow or return.

Is there an easy way to check this by looking at the TRV itself?

There is a section of piping below the boiler that directly connects flow and return. Is this what you mean by a bypass circuit?

No idea about the speed of the pump. The boiler was installed and comissioned only a year ago. I didn't realise that the speed of the pump was something that should be adjusted. I will ask the plumber about it next time I have the boiler serviced.
