hi guys this is my first post so if its in the wrong place, sorry,I live in a 1905 semi that has been renderd at some point, all the plaster has been blown of the exposed gable end wall which is always cold /wet,it gets all the weather that comes down the hill, its solid 9 inch brickwork, we would like to cure this and have saved some cash ,but who too ask? I am thinking celotex backed boards dot and dabbed on,but what size? is the render making the walls sweat? what to put back on the out side wall after ? I am in the process of removing all the old render,so I have many related questions to ask,but we want to get it right the first time, so would like to get some good advice, we live in coalville, leicestershire

If your external render was cement based then it will certainly have been causing some internal dampness and if you can get it off cleanly you are well rid of it. If it leaves a decent surface - i.e. old bricks - then your best option is to clean them up and re-point. But you'll be lucky if the surface is good enough after having render hacked off it. If you must re-render do NOT use a cement based render. Investigate one of the specialist render systems like K-rend.

For the internal the best option is a thermal laminate plasterboard. (in effect, the celotex backed board you mentioned) They come in various thicknesses up to 60mm. Any of the thicknesses will make a good difference to your internal quality but go for the thickest you can accommodate. (afford) Dot and dab is fine but personally I prefer stainless mechanical fixings. Finish with skim plaster.
