Wickes joint sealing compound

If I didn't like the look of an olive then I'd replace it, but I don't see how PTFE can make it worse, as long as it's applied evenly.

What about where the two layers lap. Isn't that a problem?

I take your point, but if you wind around the joint 4-5 times, then the thickness of one overlap is not significant enough to be a problem.

gota be ptfe for me every time. as for the thickness ur not thinkin of gas ptfe r u. i wrap ptfe around all compresion rings (olives are for Martini's) never get a problem & as the amount of joints we do thats gota be good.even wrap it around compression reducing sets.Boss white will eventually set hard & have no allowance to tighten up. Like the man said .No good all the same.

If you wrap it around the 'olive', do you need to tighten it as tight as you would without the PTFE?

Yeatight is good as they say. If u crimp ya ring it will never come off,

Have certainly stopped leaky olives with a turn or two of gas tap (on water). Don't think the overlap would matter, cos where there's metal to metal contact the ptfe just gets squashed out.

Anyone like that Loctite 55 string stuff? Hard to get the right amount on, I find.

FOr things like pressure gauges, "Liquid ptfe" is good because it sets and holds things where you left them. Takes a day to set hard, but quicker if you warm it up. Easy to undo from hard with more heat.

Tried Locktite 575 , £11.99 a small tube, and the first joint leaked gas so it went in the bin.

Favourite paste is Black Swan's Swan Seal. Virgin White (BES) is ok. Wouldn't dream of using anything without a brush!

I know that Dow Corning has a silicone joint sealant that could be good for the job- you might want to check it out. I've seen many good reviews for the 888 Silicone Joint Sealant
