Will 550mm pipe enters accommodate a 500wide towel rail?

Nope, a towel rail is usually measure from edge to edge, so a 500mm wide towel rail will usually have pipe centres of around 450-470mm ish, if your pipe centres are 550mm, then even they will need to be 'nudged' in to fit a 550mm wide rad.
How far will be determined by the width of the rad pipe and whether straight /curved/designer etc
