Will a carpet fitter be ok with this?

You would be better off securing the stairs from underneath. But this would involve a lot more work if the stairs are boarded.

Agree Andy but can’t get to it until a wall gets knocked down in the future, so the stairs are good now but hence the question about the carpet

Would take a bit more labour cutting to length and fixing enough, but less than the effort of rebating the brackets.
