The old Wilson Oil Heat did not have a Rim heater, this was added when the Teddington AD/6 Control box was adopted, if a cold start on the old Honeywell equiped boilers, we used to fit a bit of wick next to the Striker plate to give it a boost!! (oh what happy days we had!!)

The real headscratcher with a failed rimheater left in circuit was that it slowed the rotor down to half speed. Did you ever have that?

My favourite was the Rim heater that caused the Earth trip to operate after about 3 hours of running (only got caught out once though!)

The Motor does sit in the Oil Res,on bottom of Motor there is a housed ball bearing that sits on a steel thrust pad,these wear and throw the motor off central,thus creating the noise.

When the old expert takes it out,tell him to turn it over and reuse it. Let us know how you get on?

'The Man' arrived and knew whats what, My Wilson is the Older one, pre plastic end on rotor, it should have a single ball bearing in the end which is missing, I'm trying to get a Ball bearing from somewhere ? in the meanwhile I tightened the nut under the sleeve,which was loose and now it is working again,without bearing, next move is to find a Ball bearing and/or turn thrust-pad over !! Fun innit,

It preheats the chamber,prior to firing.If my memorys any good,think it was wired to 7 & 12 in the control box.

UPDATE :
Found ball bearing ,taken from an old trolley wheel with angle grinder,fitted well, tightened sleeve and replaced washer which worked well, BUT then the striker wouldn't fire up the oil, tried and tried about 20 attempts then went to bed, lay there at 1:30 am and thought ONE MORE TRY, Maybe if I remove the cover put over the hole burnt in the side by the electrode,it may increase the gap and improve spark ?
WOW it worked and lit the oil immediately, but there was a lot of oil sitting there from the failed start attempts which burned fiercely, I cut off oil & switched off mains, but it continued to burn 'fiercely'
I'll be OK I thought as long as the flames stayed in the boiler, I'll wait till it burns down ! waited,waited then OH NO Flames spread to OUTSIDE boiler around Motor underneath, Time to call fire brigade which I did, while waiting (I live in remote countryside) I concluded the house would burn down before they arrive so, I soaked towels in the sink and laying flat on the floor I wrapped one around the burning motor and gave a few squirts of a CO2 extinguisher into boiler and luckily it slowed down fire , firemen arrived and ensured all was safe and that was that !
The WILSON is NEVER to be switched ON again and I will be replacing it ASAP with a New Boiler !
Xmas was cold with no hot water DOH

So really the WISON is dead I was right all along ! I knew I was a proffessional Combustion Engineer for a reason, shame you nearly burned yer house down trying to prove us all wrong though!!!

I hope your new Grant Vortex condensing boiler is saving a fortune in oil bill now!!!

Boilerman,
I was never trying to prove anyone wrong, I was just trying to get help & advice from people who knew more than me to solve a problem, and I'm very grateful for the super support and information I got !
I tried & tried any I only give up when there is NO chance of winning....
I'm hoping for a Warmfront grant now for Full Boiler replacement ?
and will suggest a Grant Vortex, ...... Cheers
