The traditional inside shutters require a large recess either side of the window and fold away into those recesses. They were generally frame and panel construction, much like a traditional door, but are made in smaller sections of around 10 to 18in width hinged together. They were really designed for houses with very thick walls. If you try to hand that type in a modern house it may look a bit odd as the shutter section will protrude into the room. I've seen lightweight louvred shutters fitted inside wooden houses in the USA. They're hung so that when they are closed they are flush with the inside wall and they open they swing back against the wall. A similar effect could be created by using lightweight louvred doors. (the American ones have moveable variable shutters like a Venetion blind)

Thanks Scrit
The house i have just move to is an old one just over the 100 years, and i have the width to accommodate the shutters as the window is a lot smaller then the inside opening
Thanks again for your answers

Sounds like the house may have had them in the past. If you feel up to doing ftrame and panel the job should certainly prove an interesting one.
