Wireless thermostat timer for Baxi HE133

I have an ill 'Potterton wireless Electro Mech. Timer Room Thermostat' A new one is £150!

Yes. The thermostat is connecting (red light on) however the dial which sets the temperature for the thermostat seems broken as it has no effect and is stiff to turn. The 'pot' behind it must be broken. The only was I can get the CH to work is to place it on a window ledge where it is cold enough to trigger the thermostat. The clock also appears to be running slowly. I am going to get some brand new batteries today to double check but that won't fix the thermostat.
