Hi

I am wiring a light fitting into the bathroom of my 1960's house, and I am faced with a dilemma that the wires from the ceiling do not correspond with the usual modern wiring.

The 3 wires coming from the ceiling are:
1 Treble red twisted together

1 Double Black/v.Dark blue

and 1 single black/very dark blue

could someone please tell me which is which?

Thanks

The three red wires are the loop in, and should be not connected to anything but themselves, the double black is the neutral to the fitting, and the black on its own is the switched live to the fitting and should be sleeved red. You appear to be lacking a cpc, which is not altogether supprising given the age of the wiring (I am guessing it dates from the '60s too) you should have an electrician conduct a PIR at the earliest possible opportunity, and in the mean time you must not connect any class 1 luminaries or accessories to your lighting circuit. Not that I agree with the new rules, but I should also inform you that changing a luminaire in a bathroom is notifiable to building control under part P of the building regulations

you have exactly as described in 'for reference' apart from the earth

As Andrew says, you've described an incredibly common system.

What do you think "the usual modern wiring" is?
