Three white cables come into the metal mounting box. Each cable has a red wire, a green wire and a black wire. The 3 green wires are screwed onto the earth terminal in the top right-hand corner of the box. The 3 black wires are all screwed in to a connector block in the bottom right-hand corner of the box.

That leaves 2 red wires. How can I tell which ones should be connected to the three terminals at the back of the new dimmer switch: L1, L2 and the arrowed wavy line?

been asked before

it doesnt matter which, but use wavy line & L1

Although for a dimmer or pull-cord, it does not matter whether you use L1 or L2...

Don't you have 3 red wires? How many light fitting does the dimmer feed? Could be feeds out to control 2 light fittings or there could be a loop out to the next light.

Hmm. He's got 3 cables; he's accounted for the 3 earths, accounted for 3 black wires - all connected together - ? neutrals? But so far only discussed 2 reds. Where is the third red wiring going?
