wiring centres live wire positions why?

sod all to do today but estimates.
so i got thinking about stuff and so i got thinking about wiring, in turn wiring centres etc

we put live in terminal 1 N in 2 earth in 3 WHY?
surely if N went in 1 earth in 2 and then all the lives into 3 - 10 (or as many as required)
it would ensure complete seperation on N E L rather than a live next to a nuetral.

anyone have a logical reason why they are wired in this fashion.

it keeps the permanent live away from the switched lives should a terminal melt or anything it's not going to accudentally bypass the tank stat or whatever..
