Wiring run behind kitchen units - do safe zones apply?

Hi,

I need to provide power for a fridge when we fit built-in kitchen units either side, and worktop over the top. Currently there are freestanding cupboards and the fridge connects to a normal power point above worktop height.

There's insufficient depth to fit a plug and socket directly behind the fridge, so I was planning a socket in one the cupboards. Power will come from one of the existing outlets either as a spur or by extending the ring. I'm undecided whether to fit an unswitched outlet with a fuse and switch above the worktop, or a normal switched socket.

My question is whether the cable from existing socket to the new one, below worktop and behind cabinets, should still run in the safe zones?

Thanks, Tony S

If the cables are surface mounted (behind the cupboards) then safe zones don't apply. Is that what you were asking?

Well you certainly don't need a fuse above the worktop as there will be one in the fridges plug. Don't really need a switch either as you can pull the plug.

Of course, that's my confusion because I was considering using a flex outlet plate as there might be sufficient clearance.
