I had these switches for about 5 years now without any problem.

sorry for the confusion. I had the varilights before but as the downstairs one blew I wanted to change it and thats when the problems started as upstirs lights do not work. I changed the transformers thinking its them but still the same effect.I even changed the upstairs slave swich but nothing.

There is an earth wire but that is connected to the metal case in the switch box,

You need three cores between the two switches. Theres no point debating this, it WILL NOT work with two cores.

I'm not sure how you had this before, but I cannot see how it would work.

**The slave may work with just two cores, I'm not sure, but even then, you'd need to take the switched live from the master, which you cant in this setup.**

Can I just ask what is the single wire that is connecting S terminla to S terminal in the master double switch downstairs. There is a standalone wire that is conecting the two S terminal in the double si=witch downstairs, will that act as the third core? if so does that have to go to S or live terminal

How about
If you had permanent live availible at both ends then surely you would only need two cores between the switches.
