Wood Fence Post rot

I have 6x6 fence post that have wood rot in the 2-3 inches. How do I repair before placing new caps? Mike

2-3 inches where? Base, top, side?

If you're going to the trouble it would be easier to just replace them with new treated wood.

Rot is in the middle of the post at the top where the caps are nailed on.
Do I scoop out the rot and fill with silicone then place new caps?

use a wood/rot hardner and then fill with a decent two part wood filler

2-3 inches deep?

How is the condition of the post elsewhere, particularly underground?

Sound like an old post, is it hard(oak) or softwood?
