Hi

My house was built in 1928 and all the soffits are wooden. We need to replace roughly a metre of the original soffit board at the end of front of the house. Does anyone know what type of wood would have been used? Ideally I'd like to cut out the rotten section and replace with the same type of wood.

Thanks

We use 9mm ply for soffits. If the finish is acceptable then this is a wiser choice for fear of modern timber splitting etc. The ply will behave better as long as you take into account the tear out. We always (circular saw) cut the ply from the reverse side so the tear out is on the flip side.
