I have recently taken away the plasterboard from under the stairs as they were very creaky underfoot.

I found out that a couple of the treads and risers have had woodworm and the wood is very brittle (especially when it was accidentally hit with a hammer!)

The stairs are ok for the time being, but i'm wondering to either get a specialist in, a carpenter to replace the rotten wood or to get it done through the house insurance.

Any ideas would be appreciated

i assume you mean accidental dammage by the hammer!!!
as woodworm isnt accidental dammage its just lack off maintainance

theres a fair chance the woodworm is years old anyway
keep an eye out for fresh dust if you want to know if its active
