I have an old oak sideboard and there is some woodworm eating the underside of the top as evidenced by the wood powder dropping down.

Can anyone suggest any common substance that they would definately not like?

Thanks for that.

You remind me that there is a pest control firm on the A406 in North London that has a display board outside with the "Pest of the Week".

Last week the pest was "Traffic Wardens" !

I have just treated a house that was being eaten away, had replace some joist and most of the upstairs floorboards. The woodworm treatment was supplied by the owner of the house it has made by Thompsons, you needed to get well wrapped up with PPE, as it was very nasty to the skin. I would have been happy putting a couple of coats on a Traffic Warden though or even the midnight empty car park ticket bandits.

I have recently dealt with an infestation of just about every bug you can think of at home (red mites, booklice and larder/carpet beetles). In my recent experience, Boric Acid seemed to work well and is perfectly safe around kids - just mix it in water (it is not totally soluble though) and spray in corners (carpet included)
For other areas I used a well known product called Dethlac. This kills virtually every crawling insect within hours and sticks, almost invisibly to skirting and door frames (not PVC) and lasts for months (seen insects on the floor in the morning that had died after touching it)
The Rentokill stuff will work just as well though.
