Because "incontrovertible" is a common, everyday word, widely used - it has to be part of everybody's vocabulary. You'll find it used hundred of times in tabloid newspapers.

It is inconceivable for someone not to know what it means.
 
So how much did you laugh when Bodd claimed to not know the word? Do you think he has talent as a comedian?
