I am trying to fit new taps into a 30mm deep kitchen worktop which will have tiles fitted to the surface. The spindle (?) on the taps I have is not long enough to make a connection. I have been told to cut the underside of the worksurface to allow the taps to fit. This will leave the worksurface weak. Is there a metal bracket or something I can get to fit underneath that will strengthen it. Any suggestions gratefully received.

What about using a Forstner bit or a router cutter to counter bore the spindle holes, then fit a BIG washer underneath? Any weakening should not be a problem then.
