Worth Doing Or Waste Of Time?

I don't think I'd bother.

I know it's only £30 (plus the cost of an HDMI cable) but, from what I've heard, 'upscaled HD' is nowhere near the same thing as genuine HD.
In addition, I've seen some (broadcast) HD programmes that look little better than SD.

Perhaps I'm not very discriminating!

Hi,

I have to agree - your TV will have a built-in upscaler anyway, so an external one won't make any difference. However, buying a blu-ray player, even if only for DVD's, will make an improvement since the upscaling is done as soon as the data is read off the disc, rather than after conversion to analogue (as it's done now with Scart etc.) I purchased a similar budget blu-ray for £50 about a year ago (now obsolete of course!) and it's been very good.

I have HD Freeview. HD channels such as Auntie Beeb look no better than SD. It is of course conceivable that much content is not HD, but merely upscaled prior to broadcast.

Thanks, JB.

Just looking at Richer Sounds. Seems like I could do worse than replace the existing player with this for similar money:

Or this:

Is the Amazon one a UK model? What does the EN suffix mean?
Wow, one hell of a difference in prices!

I'm afraid I have no experience of these. I use a Panasonic Blue Ray disc recorder, which I find excellent in all respects save one: responses to remote control commands is very slow.

It is a couple of years or so since I bought it, and I'm sure it has been superseded since, but I seem to remember the cost wasn't much more than your second example and it has the distinct advantage of recording to BD in HD too.

Actually, the 6500 I linked to was originally on for only £66 but the next day it had shot up to £155.

I have bought a 6500 from Tesco which was originally under £100 but then it offered Clubcard Boost which doubles the value of your vouchers so I made a real meaty saving there!

Now I'm on the look-out for a half decent HDMI cable that isn't at Russ Andrew's prices!!!

As I understand it, you don't need to pay through the nose for HDMI cables.
I think there may have been a thread on here about them.

Yes, the entry level HDMI cables are fine e.g. Amazon Basics. As a rough guide expect to pay about £1 per metre plus £2 for the connectors (£1 each end) e.g. £4 for a 2 m. Anything more than this is a rip off.

Thanks, JB.

Oh wow, I can upgrade my TV to Smart, with a DVD drive. Cracking!

Yes! But be aware the 5500 does not have WiFi, the 6500 does.

If you want a DVD player and have lots of Tesco Clubcard vouchers, you can cash them in against a purchase and get double their value off the price, using Clubcard Boost.
