If someone drove a disel engined van and there was no water in the radiator what would be the effect?

most probably lots of piston bore damage as the engine block tightens around the piston....followed by engine failure.

There is a chance that one effect might be that the driver observed the Overheating indicator lamp or gauge and stopped driving it while he puzzled out what the problem was.

For a while the oil would help carry away heat. Then it would burn and smoke.

warped cyclinder head and block as well. refill with water and change the oil. keep fingers crossed.

keep an eye out for water in oil on dipstick
and
oil in water in radiator

definitely call them a **** and tell them to get a bank loan ready..

And what if the engine had no oil in it how long would it run for before it siezed?

Quite a few miles, but the engine bearings would wear badly and you would hear it knocking and rumbling long before it stopped running.

If the driver was awake he would be alerted by overheating, smell and noise.

If it`s a Vauxhall Astra with GM engine ........even a brief overheat can stuff the head gasket.......there`s one on my drive that used to be our good car service history as long as your arm ........now it`s scrap
