zanussi ZWF12070W1 won't fill

My washing machine (zanussi ZWF12070W1, five years old, no digital display) won't fill. It starts making the filling noise but stops after about 2 seconds. It's been ok until today although I have noticed recently that it's more noisy than usual when it's spinning. Any ideas? Can I fix it myself?
